Are German Shepherds sporty?

The German Shepherd is a very athletic breed of dog, endowed with a powerful, muscular body. They don't just like to exercise, they need to! As their name suggests, German Shepherds are descended from sheepdogs, so they're very resilient animals who are used to living outdoors. The modern German Shepherd is just as energetic as its ancestors, which is why these dogs make an excellent life companion for sporty owners. They'll enjoy playing many German Shepherd games with you.

Are German Shepherds playful?

Naturally, your dog loves German Shepherd games. It’s a great way for them to blow off steam while spending time with their favourite human or another four-legged friend. These dogs are full of energy and hate being alone, which is why getting enough playtime is their main preoccupation. German Shepherds are also very obedient dogs who have the ability to understand and respect the rules and boundaries that you put in place. If you have kids, don't be afraid to let them play together; these dogs are very gentle by nature. However, they may not be aware of their own size, so don't let them play rough games that involve jumping. There are lots of different games suitable for German Shepherds, so you can easily find the right one for you, your pooch, and your family.

What activities can I do with my German Shepherd?

Since German Shepherds are both intelligent and athletic, they take great pleasure in participating in all types of activities! In addition to playing your favourite German Shepherd games, there are many activities available to your doggy. If possible, make their day by doing something with them in the great outdoors. Just take your pick:

  • Hiking

  • Running

  • Bikejoring

  • Treasure hunt

  • Obedience games

  • Etc.

Make sure to also plan some mentally stimulating activities for rainy days. From time to time, your German Shepherd Dog will be happy to play with you in a quieter environment. Remember that German Shepherds are very easy to train, so you'll have no trouble teaching them a new activity.

  • Note that it’s strongly recommended for you to have German Shepherd insurance when practising a canine activity, and it's even compulsory for some activities.

What kind of games do German Shepherds like to play?

Canine frisbee

German Shepherds love to run - and it's definitely what they do best! So, canine frisbee is the perfect game to play with them. This way, you share a bonding moment together in the open air, while practising a high-intensity activity. Plus, it doesn't tire you out too much, which means that you can indulge your furry friend until they’re fully satisfied. It's also a game that you can play with several dogs at the same time, so it's ideal for socialising your dog. As such, frisbee is a must-play game for your German Shepherd!

Canicross

Canicross consists of jogging with your pooch. All you need to do is get yourself the right equipment (this is essential for preventing back injuries from your dog pulling too hard), et voilà! Another perfect game for your German Shepherd! When running with your dog, you need to make sure you jog slowly and not for too long, otherwise you risk causing them muscle damage. This activity allows you to properly train your dog in basic commands, and it's a great way for both of you to exercise at the same time! You'll soon feel the benefits of your dog for your own health.

  • Please note: Canicross is strongly discouraged for puppies.

Tracking

Tracking—or treasure hunting—is an activity that helps your dog to develop their scent. German Shepherds are very talented in this area, which is why they're often chosen to help police during rescue missions. And German Shepherd treasure hunts are not just a great way to train your dog in basic commands, but also a very stimulating activity for them, intellectually speaking.
